lots of updates and information, please at least scan the headings.

Art Hawkins Great Canadian Ultimate Game

We're on the schedule, but I didn't realize we were on thes schedule, we were unable to secure a field for the 11pm-midnight time slot we were assigned, so we will not be playing this year. If you want to participate you can play on the North Shore from 10-11pm or tomorrow in Vancouver.

Customs and Importing

Does anyone have expertise with importing into Canada, work in customs or know someone who works as a customs broker? The club is going to be buying a bunch of stuff that we'll be importing and I'm hoping to streamline the process as much as possible. Information on good or bad experiences would also be helpful.

Ultimate This Summer

So we've been playing pick-up since late April, numbers aren't great, but we'll keep going. Here's the breakdown:

Tuesdays

We're usually playing Goaltimate at Kensington #5, need at least a few more committed people before we'd be playing Ultimate regularly. So far definitely not enough for more than 2 teams worth.

Wednesdays

Better numbers generally, but they fluctuate widely. It's a great field, great location, great view. Ultimate and Goaltimate seem to happen with equal frequency. Lots of other park users, so it's great for visibility (although sometimes they seem a little oblivious). There's enough people, just need a little more commitment in order to be playing 7 on 7 with subs every week.

Sundays

Numbers don't merit continuing Sundays. If you are interested in playing Sundays still, or starting to play on Sundays, send me an email, and if the numbers justify it we'll bring it back.

Other Nights

We don't have fields on any other nights at this time, but we had reasonable success with Fridays last year. So if there's a night that works better for you and that would bring you out, I want to hear about it.

Robert Burnaby Summer Series (Disc Golf) Starts this Saturday

This summer we'll be running monthly events at Robert Burnaby. The events are beginner and junior friendly. It's a great opportunity to play in your first tournament. Full details are available on the website: http://burnabyultimate.ca/2013/06/robert-burnaby-summer-series-details/

BBQ for Saturday (June 14)

It would be nice to have a BBQ at the RB Monthly on Saturday. I have a BBQ, but will be unable to bring it due to a lack of space (with the other tournament supplies I need to bring). So if anyone either has a BBQ that they could bring, or is interested in helping transport mine, we can have a BBQ at the event.

RB Monthly Setup

I will be flagging the teepads on Friday evening, so you're welcome to come and check out the layout at that time. Saturday morning we will need to ensure that the pads are properly colour coded as pro/advanced (Blue), Intermediate (White/Yellow), Recreational/Novice/Junior (Red/Orange). So if anyone wants to help with that let me know.

RB Monthly Registration

This is the first one, and we didn't do lots of promotion or lots of advance notice, so it's hard to say how overwhelming registration will be. That said, it's always easier if there's a couple of people helping out. So if you're willing to help out with registration that would be great.

Prizes at the Summer Series

Amateurs are getting prizes and pros are getting cash. We are however running a low cost event, which means that the prize pool for the divisions is lower. That means that the value of what people win will be less. This presents a problem and an opportunity.

The problem is how do we give people prizes they want when the value of what they might win could be as low as $5?

The opportunity is for club members to unload some of their extra new or used plastic. If you decide you want to participate, you'll need to decide what discs you want to incldue and how much you want to charge for them (you don't need to only include your value discs). If your discs are claimed as prizes you will receive cash compensation for them equivalent to your asking price (unless you decide to donate partial proceeds back to the club). Likewise if someone wants to buy your disc (not as a prize) you'll receive full cash compensation there as well.

I have a fresh supply of new discs that will be in the prize pool, which include Innova, Discraft, Prodigy and Gateway (we'll be adding MVP at the next event). There's a reasonable selection of glow plastic as well.

Draw for a Disc Golf Basket

We'll be doing a draw for a Disc Golf Basket (the one available at Costco), only 300 tickets available. Second place is 2 discs, third place is 1 disc. If you're interested in getting a ticket, or hawking some tickets, let me know. 1 for $2, 3 for $5, 7 for $10, 15 for $20, the draw will take place in August at either the RB Monthly or at the Ace Race, or sooner if all tickets are sold before then.

Doubles

We're running doubles on Tuesday nights through the summer starting at 6pm. At the moment doubles has a fixed course, and loose organization. We would like to ask that one person officially take on the role of coordinating doubles. You don't necessarily need to be there, but you would be the authority on course changes, changes to the size of the ace pot, change in starting time, etc... So mostly this is making sure that we have one person who "speaks" for doubles and who can receive reports about how many people were in attendance (if they themselves didn't attend). If this is something that you'd be willing to do for the club let me know.

Clubs

Malcolm is managing Thursday club rounds, but we're looking to see if there's someone who's interested in taking on a similar role for Saturday club rounds. If you would be interested or have questions about what's involved, let me know.

Club Money

If you are currently holding on to some money for the club that you weren't sure who to give to, or just haven't had a chance to hand it over yet, please bring it to the RB Monthly and/or let me know about it. We want to make sure that we're properly accounting for all the money that has been collected, and that we know where it is. Your help is appreciated.

I committed to TD'ing one of the events, which it turns out will be the first one, but I'm happy to let other people in on the fun. IF you'd like to maybe TD or co-TD one of the future events, either using the same course and format or a different layout or format let me know.

Strange how having a new baby can keep you from doing simple things like writing email. Later than planned, but here it is.

Summer Ultimate

I am still looking for volunteers to help with all sorts of things, but they don't exist yet so we'll forge ahead anyway. If you're willing/able to help out, let me know.

The Plan

We're going to start with some pick-up, which will also serve as introductory clinics for those who need them, and recruiting opportunities for teams and players. Here's the planned pick-up schedule:

Tuesday 23 Apr 2013, 6:30-8:00pm* at Kensington #5

In terms of what will happen with each night, the plan is:

Wednesday: practice night, pick-up, or possible 5 on 5 or Goaltimate league, depending on interest
Sunday: potential secondary league night if sufficient interest

Tuesday: $700/team, $75/individual, $140/couple
Wednesday: $400/team, $40/individual
Sunday: $350/team, $40/individual

But I haven't registered yet! That's ok, it's not your fault, there hasn't been advanced registration.

Ultimate Day in Vancouver: Apr. 27

We've been invited to Ultimate Day in Vancouver, in particular the Trade Show component which runs from 11am - 3pm (setup is 10:30-10:45am). Ultimate Day is at Van Tech High School. If anyone is interested in representing Burnaby Ultimate at the event, let me know.

MVP (Golf Discs) Bulk Order

The Burnaby Disc Golf Club is looking to make a bulk order of MVP discs. If you’re looking for some let us know and we’ll add them to our order.

Volunteers

I’m looking for some volunteers to help with things, in particular this summer, but also going forward. In truth the only way that things are going to work this summer is if we end up with a team of people helping out. If you want to help but don’t see something that suits you, I’m open to other suggestions.

This could be split between multiple people if needed. Would be responsible for determining the nights offering (format, gender ratios, scheduling), resolving minor disputes and communicating to participants.

Format could be: Ultimate (7v7, 6v6, 5v5, full field, “turf field”, sub on the fly, etc�), Goaltimate (4v4 or 3v3), DDC or something else with approval and sufficient community interest.

Wednesday night coordinator

Format could be: Ultimate (7v7, 6v6, 5v5, full field, “turf field”, sub on the fly, etc�), Goaltimate (4v4 or 3v3), DDC or something else with approval and sufficient community interest.

Sunday night coordinator

Gauging player interest in additional social events and organizing those events (if interest merits it). This can be whatever you want it to be from helping encourage post-game drinks or dinner, to parties, beach day, disc golfing or whatever people are interested in.

Juniors Coordinator

At this point we have no plans to start an actual juniors league, however there are to be 3 Burnaby based high school teams this year: Burnaby North, Burnaby Central and St. Thomas Moore. So this person would be responsible for keeping in touch with those teams/coaches and seeing if there are opportunities for us to collaborate or otherwise help each other. An enthusiastic individual could go so far as to reach out to the schools without teams and encouraging their creation.

Clinics

Clinics will take place during the two weeks of pick-up prior to the start of this summer's offerings. Topics will be dictated by those who attend.

Burnaby Disc Golf Club

The Burnaby Disc Golf Club achieved "Gold Club" status with the BCDSS and now has 60+ members. If you would like to support the Club, we encourage you to join. Dues are $10 annually.

In addition to achieving "Gold Club" status The Club was also awarded a $1,000 Club Development Grant from the BCDSS which they will be using to make improvements to the course.

Current club activities are:

Running doubles on Saturday morning until the end of April (11am start)
Running Club Rounds on Saturday afternoons until the end of April ~1:30pm start (and possibly throughout the summer)
Summer Doubles Tuesday evenings (start time dictated by available light) starting first Tuesday in May
Summer Clubs Thursday evenings (start time dictated by available light) starting first Thursday in May

Doubles rounds are competitive and cost $7 ($5 purse; $1 ace pot; $1 to the club), but you are randomly paired with another player, so it can be a great opportunity to learn from a more skilled disc golfer. Club Rounds are fun alternative courses suitable for all levels of play, and can optionally be played for Robert Burnaby Tags, there is an optional contribution of $2 ($1 for ace pot/closest to the pin; $1 to the club). Everyone is welcome to such events.

Burnaby Disc Golf Club

The Burnaby Disc Golf Club is trying to get to Gold Club status with the BCDSS which means they are trying to get to 50 members, they are currently at about 10 members short.� If they hit the 50 mark before March 15th, they are eligible for an additional $500 in grant money and entitled to 50 free discs among other things.� So if you’re interested in Disc Golf, I would encourage you to support the BDGC.
Recent Club activities include:

Running weekly Doubles and Club rounds (on Saturdays in the Fall/Winter and weeknights in the Spring/Summer)
Purchasing and installing of two new practices baskets at Robert Burnaby (on near each parking lot), bringing the total number of baskets to 12 at the course.

Burnaby Disc Golf Club Meeting

There will be a meeting this Saturday after the club rounds at Me and Ed’s pizza.� The meeting is open to everyone, not just club members, although club membership is encouraged.� Check the website for additional meeting details. http://burnabydiscgolf.com/

[BUDS] Ace Race, Discraft order, and more...

this one's mostly about the Ace Race and a Discraft order, both of which are time sensitive. Other stuff has been sent to you before, but you probably didn't read it ;-)

And no, online registration for Fall Ultimate is not available yet...

Burnaby Ace Race: Oct 13, 10am-2pm Robert Burnaby Disc Golf Course

So we've got a date, and a permit, so we're good to go. Online Registration is now available, and is $30 until 9am tomorrow (Thursday Sep 20), $35 afterwards. There are a number of changes this year, so pay attention:

When: October 13th, 10am-2pm. You can start your round ANY time between 10am and 2pm, but you must finish by 3:30pm.

Where: Robert Burnaby Disc Golf Course

What: Ace Race 2012, 4 rounds of 10 holes each, giving you a chance at the grand prize, a Discraft Tournament bag ($35+ value) and 8 discs ($125+ value).

Who: You can all your friends.

Why: because it's a fun event, and you get a great players package, and it's a club fund-raising event.

Cost: $30 until midnight September 19th; $35 afterwards; $40 if we sell out and need to re-order. BDGC members save $2 on registration, membership costs $10 and runs from Sep-Aug.

I'm playing in another Ace Race, why should I come to yours? Well, we are the longest running continuous Ace Race in BC (7th year in a row). But if you're already playing in an Ace Race this year, we're going to let you play in ours without buying a new players package. You still have to throw the prototype discs, but you save a little money AND get another chance at winning a grand prize. Cost is $15 for your first score card (40 holes) and $10 for extra score cards (additional rounds).

I can't actually make it that day, can I still order a package? Yes, you can! We're happy to order you a players package even if you can't make it to the event. You'll be able to pick it up at Doubles, a Club day or at a Duck Golf event. If none of those options works, we'll ship it to you for an extra charge of $10.

What is the players package this year? Like every year you get 2 brand new prototype discs from Discraft, this year they are drivers, both in Z plastic. You also get: 1 aluminum water bottle, 1 pair of UV sunglasses, 1 Ace Race 2012 SuperColor mini, 1 Discraft sticker.

What weights are available this year? We never really know until we get our shipment of players packages, but the discs are being manufactured in weights from 164g-179g.

I've never golfed or played in a "tournament" before, is this for me? Yes! The Ace Race is a perfect first event. Everyone gets to keep their players package, which is a good value. The event is otherwise low key and fun. You even get to pick your group, so you can bring friends and all play your rounds together!

How do I register? You can register with David Cowley at Doubles, Club Nights or even at Ultimate over the next 9 days, or you can register on-line once the form is ready (might be a couple of days).

Is there an Ace Pot? Yes, but it's optional. It costs you another $5 to buy in to the Ace Pot, and all aces pay out proportionally.

No bag this year? Nope, but I've got 6 left from last year if you want one ($20).

No hat this year? Nope, but I've got several in different colours if you need one ($10).

Do you still have discs from previous Ace Races? Yes, I've got a few from 2011 (Zeppelin), 2010 (Hornet), 2009 (Focus), they're all $10.

Are you looking for volunteers to help out? Sure, I'm happy to have people help set up the course, handle registration and players package distribution, run a BBQ, or other associated things at the event.

Discraft Order: need some discs, accessories or apparel?

In conjunction with the Ace Race this year, I'm permitted to put in an order with Discraft for up to 200 discs at preferred pricing levels. If you're looking for something, this might be a good opportunity for it. Weight preferences should be expressed, colour preferences for golf discs can't be honoured.

The Burnaby Disc Golf Club (part of BUDS) had a successful meeting last week, with many things discussed. The most exciting developments out of that meeting are probably:

deciding to purchase 2 additional baskets for the course (to be used as practice baskets near each parking lot)
deciding to become a PDGA Affiliate Club
deciding to continue Doubles and Club Rounds through the winter on Saturdays

Over the summer the Club was very successful in a membership drive, where they managed to get 33 people signed up! Memberships however expired at the end of August. Already this year 18 people have renewed their memberships and 1 new person has joined. Membership is $10 for the year and includes the following benefits:

supporting the Club and its activities and the case for increased Disc Golf in Burnaby
BCDSS membership
discounts at BCDSS events (save $5 on your entry to Duck Golf events)
discounts at BDGC events (save $2 on your Ace Race players package)

PDGA Affiliate Club: Burnaby Disc Golf Club

Starting October 1st, 2012 the Burnaby Disc Golf Club will be an Affiliate Club of the PDGA. This means that you'll be able to sign up for or renew your PDGA membership through the BDGC and save $5 off the regular price. If you are going to be a PDGA member this is a good option, as signing up in October will actually make you a PDGA member until December 2013 (up to 14 months)!

There are also some discounts available to PDGA members of PDGA Affiliate Clubs, which include 10-15% discounts at some retailers.

Fall League 2012 (Monday Nights ongoing)

Hopefully everyone has already heard this, but we're back on Monday nights, we're back at Byrne Creek and it's 8-10pm.

I've got a paper registration form all ready to post to the website (which is down) to be followed by electronic registration later. But here's the relevant details:

Sign up for 1-4 months
Pick which months you want to play
Depending on numbers we'll do: pick-up Goaltimate, pick-up Ultimate, a 4 team Goaltimate League or a 4 team Ultimate League

Other things to determine through registration:

Do we play Dec 24th?
Do we play Dec 31st?
Are you interested in practicing with other Burnaby players with the hopes of putting a team together for BC Regionals and qualifying for Nationals?
Do you also want to be part of the Burnaby Disc Golf Club (costs $5 for Ultimate players)

So what is this going to cost you?

1 month: $40
2 months: $70
3 months: $90
4 months: $100
But can't I just drop-in? Yes, you can, but what we really need is for people to commit. We are trying to build something here, and it's hard without commitment. Drop-in fees are correspondingly astronomical: $20 first visit, $10 subsequent visits (would cost you $160-180 for the 15-17 weeks). For people new to BUDS, you can drop-in for $5 your first time, and we'll give you credit for that $5 if you register. After that first week though, the $10 drop-in fee applies if you don't register.

But I haven't registered yet! That's ok, it's not your fault, there hasn't been advanced registration, and the website is currently experiencing problems so the paper form isn't available there (nor is online reg). Consequently I'll have paper registration copies and pens out tonight to facilitate registration for people. If you have payment with you tonight, great, if not you can bring it next week.

Team Burnaby! Nationals 2013 Anyone? They're in Vancouver

So for those of you who haven't heard, Nationals are in Vancouver next summer. This is at least a little bit of a surprise, given that they were in Victoria this year (just a few weeks back). Surprise or not, we should take advantage of this and see if we can't put one or more Burnaby teams together for regionals and if we do well enough Nationals.

In the short term, we probably shouldn't worry too much about what type of team (Open, Women's, Junior, Masters) and should just focus on who might be willing to make a commitment to try to be on such a team.

My current thinking is that if there are interested people, that we should try to meet an hour early for Fall (e.g. at 7pm on Mondays) and do some cardio and drills on the track and the end of the fields before playing for a couple of hours each week. If numbers allow, we'll be able to invite various higher calibre teams to come and play us at Byrne Creek over the course of the Fall Season (beside regular Fall League) and hopefully be able to elevate our game to the point where we can compete at Nationals.

I'm open to other suggestions for training/practicing. But in the short term, let me know if you're interested and we'll see if we can get critical mass. If there's a lot of support we may meet as early as next Monday to start training.

Summer 2013 Ultimate

There's a lot of work to be done for next Summer, not the least of which is deciding what type of Ultimate we want to offer.

I am intending to take a back seat when it comes to making those sorts of decisions for next year, and instead, I'm hoping to get a small group of individuals (or one crazy individual) to take on the planning and implementation for next summer. I'm a little distracted by getting things ready for Fall Ultimate, but you can expect to hear more about this idea in the coming month. In the mean time if it's something that you think you're interested in being a part of, start giving it some thought. Here are some important dates and considerations to use as starting points for your thinking:

October 31st: deadline for submitting tournament booking requests for April-August time period (should we want to arrange a tournament)
December 31st: deadline for submitting field booking requests for Summer 2013 (information must include a roster of players, with their home or work addresses with at least 60% being in Burnaby in order to get preferred rates; for turf that's the difference between $37.83/hr and $73.82/hr)
What do we want to offer: Ultimate, Goaltimate, 5v5 Ultimate (VUL turf style), something else?
What gender ratios do we offer/enforce: 4/3 or 3/4, Open (no gender ratios), 5/2, something else?
What days and/or nights do we want to play? Maple Ridge Ultimate has built a successful 8 team league by running pick-up/clinics on Thursday nights and games on Sunday afternoon/evenings (8-teams); Surrey Ultimate had a 10 team league this summer on Sunday afternoons...
What advertising/promotion do we want to do?
What do we want to include as part of registration? Some leagues include shirts/jerseys and/or discs.

So as you can see there's a lot to be considered, and it's time for some fresh ideas and new blood to see what they can do.

Some of you might be wondering, why now? Which is a reasonable question. On a lot of levels it's passed time that something like this should have happened. Now however, the level of interest in a rebuild and change is high enough, and additional forces make it the only sensible thing to do. In particular, there's a decent chance that I will be moving before next summer, quite likely outside of Burnaby (although probably not so far away that I'm unable to still participate in BUDS offerings). Additionally, we're expecting our first future disc sports enthusiast in the new year, which will obviously change priorities and time allocation significantly.

If you've got questions, or suggestions you can fire them my way (keeping in mind that there might be a delayed response due to the start of Fall League).

Masters Pickup Ultimate in Vancouver (Age 33+ by Dec 31, 2013)

So starting this Thursday (Aug 30th) there is Masters Pickup Ultimate at Winona Park in Vancouver. It starts at 5:30pm and goes until people get tired or it gets too dark. It's going to be a recurring weekly thing until they run out of daylight to make it viable (it's a grass field with no lights).

I expect that's where you'll find the most up to date information. Also, please feel free to pass this along to people who might be interested.

Just for clarity, this is for Masters, which in Ultimate terms means people who are 33 or older, with a grace period granted to those people who turn 33 by the end of the year (e.g. born in 1979). I don't think they're probably going to be militant about it. Also, if they do go by the strict rules, women only need to be 30 (e.g. born in 1982) to qualify. Like I say, I think it's probably a combination of demographic and attitude that they are looking for, so if you've got a master's attitude and they don't still check your ID at the pub you're probably ok.

Ace Race 2012: Oct 13th 10am-2pm (permit pending)

So we've got a date, we're just waiting on the official permit before writing it in stone. There are a number of changes this year, so pay attention:

When: October 13th, 10am-2pm

Where: Robert Burnaby Disc Golf Course

What: Ace Race 2012, 4 rounds of 10 holes each, giving you a chance at the grand prize, a Discraft Tournament bag ($35+ value) and 8 discs ($125+ value).

Who: You can all your friends.

Why: because it's a fun event, and you get a great players package, and it's a club fund-raising event.

Cost: $30 until midnight September 19th; $35 afterwards; $40 if we sell out and need to re-order. BDGC members save $2 on registration, membership costs $10 and runs from Sep-Aug.

What weights are available this year? We never really know until we get our shipment of players packages, but the discs are being manufactured in weights from 164g-179g.

Is there an Ace Pot? Yes, but it's optional. It costs you another $5 to buy in to the Ace Pot, and all aces pay out proportionally.

No bag this year? Nope, but I've got 6 left from last year if you want one ($20).

No hat this year? Nope, but I've got several in different colours if you need one ($10).

Do you still have discs from previous Ace Races? Yes, I've got a few from 2011 (Zeppelin), 2010 (Hornet), 2009 (Focus), they're all $10.

Paving at Robert Burnaby

Starting today they are paving the road that takes you to the bottom parking lot at Robert Burnaby (i.e. the start of the Disc Golf course), the paving is scheduled to take 2-3 weeks depending on the weather. The course is still open, but you'll need to park by hole 5 (gravel parking lot).

Burnaby Disc Golf Club meeting TONIGHT 7pm

There will be a meeting this Wednesday at 7pm of the Burnaby Disc Golf Club (which is part of BUDS). Over the past couple of years the Club has raised money through events (mostly through weekly doubles and club nights) and is meeting to discuss what to do with the money, general club priorities, course maintenance and more. [BUDS] DG 2-4pm Today; Fall; Nationals and MORE!

No Ultimate => Disc Golf at Robert Burnaby DGC 2-4pm

We have no field today, so it's a bit of a forced vacation today. That said, last week we had about 30 people out playing Ultimate, and some of them were looking for something to do today... the result: Disc Golf at Robert Burnaby Disc Golf Course!

Never played before? Don't worry, no experience necessary, this is just a fun round or two.

Can I bring other people? Sure, bring whoever you want.

Does it cost anything? Nope, like pretty much all casual Disc Golf, all you need to do is show up and play the free course.

But I have a family! Congratulations, now you have the opportunity to introduce them all to Disc Golf! There's no reason you can't bring them all out. If your kids are small enough to need strollers you're going to want a jogging or off-road stroller as there are no paved paths on the course.

But I have no golf discs! That's okay BUDS has loaner discs, and I also have a trunk full of discs you can buy if you like it. You can even play with an Ultimate disc or any old flying disc. It's not as good from a technique perspective but you can still learn the basics of the game. You'll need at least one disc per/person.

Where is this supposed Disc Golf Course? It's at the bottom of Hill Ave in Burnaby, right next to the freeway, in Robert Burnaby Park (near the off-leash dog park). Bigger landmarks that might help you find it: near Cariboo high school; near Edmonds and Canada Way. (http://goo.gl/maps/8rTNV)

So I'm going to be at the course at least between 2-4pm, there's a good chance I'll be a little early and stay potentially quite late. There will be some experienced golfers there, so there will be opportunities for clinics or instruction for those who want some.

If you can't make it during the time slot but want to come out, shoot me an email until noon today and we can potentially make other arrangements. After that, you'll need to call me on my cell: 604.671.2107 (or walk around the course when you get there, it's not that big).

If you arrive late and need to borrow discs, the discs can be returned at Ultimate in the coming weeks.

Summer 2013 Ultimate

There's a lot of work to be done for next Summer, not the least of which is deciding what type of Ultimate we want to offer.

October 31st: deadline for submitting tournament booking requests for April-August time period (should we want to arrange a tournament)
December 31st: deadline for submitting field booking requests for Summer 2013 (information must include a roster of players, with their home or work addresses with at least 60% being in Burnaby in order to get preferred rates; for turf that's the difference between $37.83/hr and $73.82/hr)
What do we want to offer: Ultimate, Goaltimate, 5v5 Ultimate (VUL turf style), something else?
What gender ratios do we offer/enforce: 4/3 or 3/4, Open (no gender ratios), 5/2, something else?
What days and/or nights do we want to play? Maple Ridge Ultimate has built a successful 8 team league by running pick-up/clinics on Thursday nights and games on Sunday afternoon/evenings (8-teams); Surrey Ultimate had a 10 team league this summer on Sunday afternoons...
What advertising/promotion do we want to do?
What do we want to include as part of registration? Some leagues include shirts/jerseys and/or discs.

So as you can see there's a lot to be considered, and it's time for some fresh ideas and new blood to see what they can do.

If you've got questions, or suggestions you can fire them my way (keeping in mind that there might be a delayed response due to the start of Fall League).

Reminder for anyone who hasn't read it elsewhere, tonight we're at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex West - Field #4 from 8pm-10pm (instead of our normal 6:30-8:30). So no excuses for being late ;-) Also we may have some players from MRU (Maple Ridge Ultimate) joining us tonight...

Fall League

I have asked for Mondays in the Fall, which is our historic go to night. I'm still waiting for confirmation of our allotment from the city. You'll know shortly afer I do, which should be in a couple of weeks.

20 Aug 2012: No update yet, still waiting to hear from the city, which is why there haven't been any additional announcements.

Babysitters Wanted?

At this point it doesn't appear as though there's enough interest to make this happen. If you're a parent and would like it revisisted in the future, please do bring it up. Otherwise, lobby the other parents who are playing (or better yet those who aren't playing) and we'll see about getting the critical mass necessary to make it viable.

For those lacking context, the idea here was to bring in someone to supervise children while their parents played Ultimate, so that the parents can focus on the game and not worry overmuch about their children. This would likely have involved a cost, and would have required someone that we brought in specifically for the purpose (volunteer, spouse, or child care professional [e.g. babysitter]). Given that many of our field locations are near schools, or other facilities with rentable rooms, the childcare might have been held indoors (especially in non-summer based offerings). That said, the actual final product would have been shaped by those using it.

GAMES MOVED: to Kensington #5 6-8pm tonight (Friday)

If you haven't seen the updates on the website, twitter and Facebook, Burnaby North Turf has been damaged and is currently closed. We have been moved to Kensington #5 for our last Friday of the summer.

This is a GRASS field about 100m West of Burnaby North Turf, on the western side of the tennis courts. The closest parking is off of Frances St. It is the same 6-8pm time slot, although there is unlikely to be a group there before or after us, so we can probably get some extended playing time for those who are able.

Remember this is the last Friday of the summer, after tonight we're on Mondays only for the rest of August.

Update: So with the various replies and the people who just have kept coming out, we've made it to about the 2/3 or 3/4 mark, but not all the way. This would mean that if people were interested we could do a 4 team Goaltimate league, or play VUL turf style 5v5 or something, but not 7v7 like we would like. I expect that many of the people interested in the league option would not be interested in those other options. If you are, let me know.

There's been some talk about trying to get even a brief 4 week league going. Honestly thus far the numbers on either Monday or Friday don't support it. That said, there are people who are not playing because they are primarily interested in playing league. Are there enough of them? Maybe.

So here's the plan:

Aug 20: 8:00-10:00

Depending on interest and our fall field allocation there might be a chance to extend the summer league into September, but that can be a separate discussion once the fields are confirmed.

At this point, everyone is just "expressing interest", if enough people do (4 teams or 40+ individuals or combination thereof) we'll do registration and make it happen.

Our last Friday of the summer will be this Friday, August 10th. So come out an enjoy it. If there's a huge outpouring of demand I'll see if any additional Friday field times have become available for the rest of August since our original allotment.

Folks,

just a reminder that we play rain or shine. We'll have Goaltimate as an option in case the weather keeps too many people away.

Remember there are washrooms which can be used as change rooms near the field, so as long as you bring a change of clothes, a towel and something to keep them dry while you're playing you can both play and be dry immediately after the game.

Could be a great day to work on your zone defense...

Folks,

just a reminder that we're at Burnaby North turf tonight (Friday 06 Jul 2012) from 6-8pm. The weather's really nice so far today, so remember to bring sunscreen, water and a white and a dark shirt. If there's interest I'll stick around for 30 minutes afterwards tonight and do some clinic type stuff (last week we went over the basics of horizontal offense).

Also, on Monday we're at Burnaby Lake West #4 (turf) from 6:30-8:30pm. If you play Ultimate on Friday and Monday you totally have an excuse to do nothing physical all weekend ;-)

This Friday: 6-8pm Burnaby North Turf

So we're at Burnaby North again this Friday (and we stay there until August 10th), school's out for the summer and it's a Friday before a long weekend, so make it out if you can. We'll play Goaltimate if the numbers aren't good (Goaltimate can be played with only 6 people total).

This Monday: 6:30-8:30pm Burnaby Lake Sports Complex West - Field #4 (Turf)

The Holiday Monday June 2nd is our First Monday of the summer, all Monday games will be at Burnaby Lake West, on Field #4, which is the lower field immediately to the east of the parking lot (you can literally park right beside the field). It's a Holiday Monday, so everyone welcome, if numbers support it we can have upto two games going, if the turnout is small we can do Goaltimate, or a single field.

It's a turf field, but it's newer than the rest at BLSC-W. Additionally at the field there are team benches which have a shelter associated with them, so there's somewhere dry-ish to keep your stuff if it's raining.

Babysitters Wanted?

There are an increasing number of parents who play in BUDS, so these questions are targeted specifically at them:

Would having childcare (e.g. a on site babysitter) make it so that you would be more likely to play Ultimate?
Would it influence whether you played alone or whether your spouse/partner/other appropriate term could play with you?
If the idea is something that you like, what ages are your children and would they require any special level of supervision?
If the idea is something that you like, would you be willing to pay a fee to have your children watched while you play (either on a seasonal basis or on a per night/per child basis)?

This is an idea we've floated before, but at the time there wasn't enough interest (or maybe enough parents) to make it feasible. Given that some nights there are enough kids that if they were a little older they could make their own team, it seemed as though it would be appropriate to revisit.
